Pilgrimage (Waikato), Saturday 19th September, commencing in Matamata

For Licensed Lay Ministers (LLMs) and Clergy in the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki.

Registrations are now closed.

LLMs (Waikato-based) – please provide an apology to the Bishop’s Office if you are unable to be present.

Clergy – this Pilgrimage Day is optional for you, but highly recommended!

Note: If you are not clergy or LLM – please contact Pam, our awesome Admin for WT Dio, email admin@wtanglican.nz, for info to make a koha payment for the Waikato Pilgrimage (suggested koha from $30pp).

This Pilgrimage day will include:

Visits to points of significance at Dunlop Road, Peria Road and Wairere Falls, to hear stories of Wiremu Tāmihana, Tārore and Ngākuku.

Ngāti Hauā Hauora Centre (Iwi welcome and picnic lunch).

All Saints Church, Matamata (sessions with The Ven. Andrew Evans and The Most Rev’d David Moxon).

“When Wiremu Tāmihana, Ngākuku and Tārore narrated parts of Luke’s gospel in Māori at the Matamata Pā, in a totally by Māori for Māori context, the message would have resonated in thought form as well as its appeal to a new form of compassion and hope. This also partly explains why Te Rongopai, the Gospel itself, eventually spread so quickly and easily across ngā Iwi Māori, the Māori tribes, all over Aotearoa, often beyond Pākehā mediation.” – Excerpt from ‘A Pilgrims Guide: A Child Shall Lead – The Story of Tārore of Waharoa’, by Archbishop David Moxon

Background:

The association of the Anglican church te Hāhi Mihinare , and later the Diocese of Waikato and Taranaki with the people of Ngāti Hauā goes back to 1838. We were inter-dependent partners in ministry then, and are enjoying the ongoing renewal of that mutual heritage today.

This contemporary mutuality is found in recent and real links between Ngāti Hauā and Mahi Mihinare Anglican Action, in shared community facing ministry at Waharoa. It is also represented by the ongoing presence of three Anglican clergy on the Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust Board, a skills training and riparian planting programme in Piako and Waikato.

For this reason, our pilgrimage will be welcomed at Waharoa by Ngāti Hauā during the lunch. In attendance will be the paramount chief of Ngāti Hauā, Te Tumuaki Hone Tāmihana, and the chair of the Ngāti Hauā Mahi Trust, Tuatahi Nightingale Pene. Tuatahi is also now on the Mahi Mihinare Anglican Trust Board alongside the Rev’d Henare Waaka. They both represent Ngāti Hauā as mana whenua of Te Ara Hou, the site of our regional office Charlotte Brown House.

Timetable:

9:15-9:30am Please arrive with time to collect your name-tag and sign-in at Matamata Anglican Church Hall

9:45am Briefing

10:00am Buses depart

5:00pm Day concludes (in Matamata)

Please bring with you:

Picnic lunch.

Water drink bottle (recommended).

Raincoat or umbrella.

Shoes comfortable for a day that will include some short walking (note: no strenuous walking involved).
